Jem Muharrem

Words on thought, art and music

About Jem Muharrem

After many years of being prolix and rather nosey, I am putting a pen (or keyboard) where my mouth is…

Brighton-born, ethnically Cypriot and an Australiophile, I have worked as a musician for most of my of my adult life. I have played violin with many orchestras including Southbank Sinfonia, Royal Opera House, Scottish Opera, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. I toured with Dionne Warwick on the British leg of her 50th anniversary tour and am a member of the Karavan Boombox, an Anglo-Turkish folk/rock/reggae group. I occasionally lead Ensemble Pelato, a collective of classical musicians who improvise in many different styles and have been found jamming in places as diverse as medieval Tuscan hill towns, Joanna Lumley’s barn conversion and the Bakerloo line.

I lead a double life as a musician and journalist – I gained experience at Classic FM, Mail on Sunday and Men’s Health among others. I gained my NCTJ qualification at Journalist Works at the Argus in Brighton.
